Today there are many services available to help people to make a will online. Some of these services offer information and tips to help people to draft their wills. Other sites will offer downloadable wills that people can take and fill in with their information and particular situation. These online wills have to be witnessed and executed in order to be in effect in case of that person’s demise. However, the information that is in the will is fairly straight forward for most people to fill in, with the most important aspects being who inherits any assets, who will be the executor, and who will be guardian of the children should both parents perish.

Decisions to Make Online Will

When drawing up and online will, one of the first decisions that people will have to make is if they are going to make and individual will or if they are going to make the will jointly with their spouse. If the assets that the couple has are simple assets, then a basic form will suffice and the couple can do the will together. When filling out the online will, the couple will list out their assets and tell who will inherit what if one or the other should die. Most of the time, the spouses will choose to leave the majority of assets to the other spouse, with only certain special items being left to the children. If both spouses die, the online will lists the guardians for the children and the assets will go into a trust account until the children are old enough to have them. Most of the time the assets are divided equally between the children if both parents die.

If the online will is for a single parent, the parents will usually set it up so that the children will equally get portions of the assets when they are old enough. Until that time, the children are put in the charge of a guardian who may or may not have access to a certain amount of the money in order to care for the children each month. Otherwise, the money is placed into a trust account which is managed by the executor of the will. The executor can then decide if the money should be dispersed before the children are of a legal age for certain extreme situations where money is needed by them.

The online will also specifies what is to happen if the children die before the parent or parents die. Usually, the parents will list out the next of kin so that it is clear who is to receive the assets if the parents and children both die and there is not anyone else in the immediate family to inherit the money.
